Gate type
The gate type is decided first, because everything else — motor, track, cost — follows from it. The choice is driven by the space available at the entrance, not by preference alone.
The default choice for Auckland's steep, narrow sections. A sliding gate runs along a track or cantilever carriage parallel to the fence line, so it needs very little space in front of the entrance — only a clear run-back along the fence line equal to the opening width plus a parking tail. Ideal where the driveway slopes up from the road.
A pair of leaves that open inward into the property. Swing gates need clear, level ground behind the opening for the leaves to sweep through — roughly the radius of each leaf. Best suited to flatter sites with deep driveways and where a sweeping, classic entrance is wanted.
Two or more panels that slide and stack into a fraction of the run-back length a single-panel slider needs. The right answer when the opening is wide but the available run-back along the boundary is short — common on tight inner-Auckland frontages.
Site geometry
More than anything else, the physical site determines what's possible. These four measurements settle the gate type before any design work begins.
Measure the clear opening between posts or boundary walls at the narrowest point. Every gate is custom-made to the exact width, but the width drives panel count, motor size and cost, so an accurate site measure is the starting point for any specification.
For a sliding gate, the fence line behind the opening must be clear for the full travel of the panel plus tail. For a swing gate, the swept arc inside the property must be free of steps, planting, downpipes and vehicle parking. Either way, clearance dictates which gate type is physically possible on the site.
Cantilever and track sliders need vertical clearance above the gate for the track and guide rollers. If there's a carport, beam or tree branch over the entrance, a track slider may be ruled out in favour of a cantilever or telescopic system.
A driveway that falls away steeply from the road suits a sliding or cantilever gate that tracks level, but makes an inward-swinging gate impractical. We survey the fall along both the opening and the run-back to confirm the right mechanism.
Material
The material decides how the gate ages. In Auckland's coastal climate, this is the parameter with the biggest long-term impact on appearance, maintenance and lifespan.
We build in 6000 series structural grades of aluminium — strong, light and highly corrosion resistant for Auckland's coastal environment. Unlike mild steel it won't rust, and unlike wrought iron it won't need ongoing rust treatment.
Premium powder-coat finishes in a wide colour range are baked on for durability and colour-fastness. A well-prepared alloy gate with a quality powder coat will look good and stay protected for years, far outlasting a painted steel gate in the same conditions.
Solid-panel gates act like sails. On exposed coastal ridgelines a fully closed gate has to withstand significant wind load. Slat, louvre and perforated designs let wind pass through, reducing the load on both the gate and the motor — an important factor on exposed Auckland sites.
Automation
The operator has to be matched to the gate it's driving and the power available at the entrance. Get this wrong and the gate will be slow, unreliable and short-lived.
The motor must be rated for the gate's weight and the number of cycles per hour it will perform. A heavy solid panel opened dozens of times a day needs a substantially larger motor than a light slat gate used twice. Under-sizing the motor is the most common cause of premature failure.
Where mains power is available at the entrance, a 240V operator is simplest. Where running a cable is impractical — long driveways, rural or rear entrances — a solar-charged system keeps the gate independent of the house supply and running through power outages.
Even on a mains system, a battery backup keeps the gate operable during an outage and provides the smooth, consistent power the controller prefers. Most modern operators include or accept a backup battery as standard.
Access & safety
How people get in, and how the gate keeps them safe, are decided together. The right combination depends on who uses the entrance and whether the public can reach the moving gate.
Remotes, keypad codes, smartphone app, intercom or a combination. Choose the method that matches how the household and visitors actually use the entrance — a busy family may want remotes and an app, a rental may rely on a keypad with changeable codes.
A video intercom lets you see and speak to visitors and release the gate from anywhere. Gate automation integrates with most modern doorbell and CCTV systems, turning the entrance into a monitored checkpoint.
Photocells across the opening, safety edges on the leading edge, and in-built obstacle detection are all part of a compliant NZ gate safety system. The number and type depend on the gate type, opening width and whether the public can reach the gate while it operates.
Design
Once the practical parameters are settled, the gate can be designed to complement the property — balancing looks, privacy, council rules and the coastal environment.
A gate is the first impression of a property. Louvre and horizontal-slat designs suit contemporary homes, solid panels suit privacy-focused entrances, and more decorative detailing complements traditional architecture. The gate should frame, not fight, the home behind it.
A solid or tight-louvre gate screens the home and vehicles from the street. A slat or perforated design maintains a sense of openness and airflow while still deterring entry. The right balance is a lifestyle choice as much as a security one.
Auckland Council rules govern gate height relative to the road boundary and sight lines around vehicle crossings. A gate over a certain height or one that obstructs visibility for traffic may need to be set back or reduced. We design within the rules from the outset.
Properties within sight of the harbour face salt spray and humidity. Here the material choice matters most — structural-grade aluminium with a marine-rated powder coat and stainless fasteners is the durable specification. Steel gates in the same location will require far more maintenance.
